How can allergy shots help ease environmental and seasonal allergies?

Allergies, whether environmental or seasonal, can greatly impact a patient’s quality of life. Sneezing, sniffling, and overall congestion can make it difficult to function at one’s best. While many medications taken orally can help reduce these problematic symptoms, some patients still struggle routinely to get through the day. In situations such as this, patients in the state of Texas may find it helpful to work with an allergist who can administer allergy shots for more long-term relief. At The ENT and Allergy Centers of Texas, patients can ask about effective treatment options to control their symptoms, including allergy shots.

What can I expect from an allergy shot?

For patients over the age of five who are dealing with symptoms impacting the nose, eyes, and ears, including those with mild asthma, allergy shots may be an effective way of managing environmental and seasonal allergies. These shots significantly reduce the allergic response in the body while improving the body’s natural tolerance to specific antigens. In essence, a very small amount of controlled, specific antigens are injected in the hopes of the allergic responses reducing their effect on one’s overall health and wellbeing, reducing the symptoms associated with one’s allergies.

How often are the shots administered?

At the beginning of treatment, patients need to have several shots to help build up the body’s response to the specific allergen. During this time, which can last six months or longer, injections are administered approximately once a week. During the second phase, maintenance levels are reached. Patients have injections done monthly for several years until they have seen a dramatic decrease in their allergic responses. While the entire process can take years to complete, it can provide patients freedom from allergy symptoms for the remainder of their lives!
