What is the purpose of adenoid removal?

What are the adenoids?
Our doctors describe the adenoids as lumps that are located behind the nose and roof of the mouth. They cannot be seen without special instruments. They are often higher than the tonsils, which are lumps in the back of the throat. In many instances, patients will have both the tonsils and the adenoids removed at the same time. This is due to common problems such as recurrent infections, significant enlargement that obstructs breathing, and chronic tonsilitis.
At what point should adenoids be removed?
When patients are having difficulties with infections or obstruction, an ENT professional may recommend the removal of one or both the tonsils and/or adenoids. The procedure is a routine surgery that is performed regularly by doctors and has minimal risks or consequences. Patients who are going to undergo this procedure will want to ask their doctor about what they can expect. In many cases, the removal of the adenoids (and tonsils) allow the patient to experience less infections and complications, improving their overall quality of life. The doctor will make a recommendation for adenoid removal after more conservative treatment options have been ruled out prior to surgical intervention.
