What is sinusitis?
The sinuses are cavities within the head that can become problematic for some patients. The sinus cavities are often found around the nose and up into the forehead and down near the mouth. When these areas become inflamed from allergies or infection, they can become blocked and painful. Continued inflammation, pressure, and other problems such as pain and fever can develop due to the bacteria that can grow in the blocked areas.
In most cases, patients who have sinusitis, sometimes referred to a “sinus infection,” can speak to their ENT doctor about the use of antibiotics to kill the bacteria and decrease inflammation and blockage. When this occurs, patients feel relief and can get back to their daily routine without interruption.
Unfortunately, some patients deal with sinusitis on a regular basis. Recurring and chronic sinusitis may benefit from endoscopic sinus surgery. This surgical procedure is typically an option for patients who cannot control or resolve their sinus problems. Those who do not respond to traditional methods of treatment may be a patient who can benefit from surgical intervention.
Understanding endoscopic sinus surgery
Also known as FESS, or “functional endoscopic sinus surgery,” this surgical treatment is often a last resort for patients with chronic infections. The treatment is minimally invasive and is used to widen the exits of the sinus cavities to keep them from becoming blocked and allowing them to properly drain. Patients who undergo surgery will see more long-term results than with antibiotic treatment alone.
