The Effects of Obstructive Sleep Apnea
When you breathe, the muscles in your throat work to pass air into and out of the lungs. Obstructive sleep apnea is a breathing disorder that occurs when the muscles of the throat relax too much and block the airway. This disrupted breathing is common amongst men and women who have obstructive sleep apnea, but other symptoms are variable.
- A sore throat when you wake up
- Snoring
- Inability to sleep
- Headaches in the morning
- Feeling sleepy during the day
Diagnosing Sleep Apnea
Snoring and irregular breathing can be caused by several medical conditions, so we perform tests to properly diagnose your obstructive sleep apnea.
- Oximetry: Measures your heart rate and blood oxygen level.
- Nocturnal polysomnography: A sleep study that measures brain activity, eye movement, heart rate, respiration, leg movement and blood oxygen level.
- Portable cardiorespiratory testing: Measures lung and heart function.
The tests are performed while you sleep and help us find any abnormalities that are linked to obstructive sleep apnea.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea Treatment
Valentine’s Day could be the first time that you feel like you had a good night’s sleep. Mild to moderate cases may be alleviated with a special breathing apparatus or mouthpiece. If you have advanced obstructive sleep apnea, surgery can help. The procedure involves removing excess tissue that interferes with your airway at night.
