Endoscopic sinus surgery for patients with chronic sinusitis
- Posted on: Jun 15 2020
What can I expect from endoscopic sinus surgery?
The use of an endoscope makes this procedure much less invasive than other more traditional surgeries. The procedure is performed in an operating room with general anesthetics. The endoscope will be used to widen the sinuses to improve drainage and reduce the risk of the sinus cavities from becoming infected or inflamed. This procedure may be done alongside other procedures such as a rhinoplasty or deviated septum. With this procedure, many patients will find relief from chronic sinus problems and enjoy a better quality of life.
Do I need to stay at the hospital after surgery?
The endoscopic sinus surgery is an outpatient procedure. Patients are discharged from the hospital on the same day as their surgery, though there are some situations in which patients will need to be monitored for a day in the hospital following the endoscopic sinus surgery. Patients can typically return to work and other activities within a week, though it can take approximately six weeks for the sinuses to fully heal and for results to be achieved.
Who is a candidate?
Your doctor will evaluate you to determine if you are a good candidate for this surgery. Many patients find that more conservative methods of treating their sinus issues are effective until their condition becomes more severe.
